Advanced Verb Conjugation - In bilingual dictionaries, this feature allows the user to look up a variety of verb phrases, such as "I went," to find the equivalent in the other language.

BOOKMAN® - This is the term used for Franklin's expandable electronic library. It refers to products with card slots in which Franklin's electronic book cards can be inserted. BOOKMAN® book cards can be used in both BOOKMAN® and BOOKMAN® II units.

BOOKMAN® II - This is the term used for Franklin's expandable electronic library using the new patented processor. Note: BOOKMAN® II cards can only be read in BOOKMAN® II platforms.

BOOKMAN® Book Card - Book cards are interchangeable cartridges, each containing a Franklin book. A book card is about the size of a domino; they snap easily in and out of BOOKMAN® units, as cassettes snap in and out of cassette players.

BOOKMAN® Writer - The BOOKMAN® Writer system lets you download Franklin titles and transfer them one at a time to a rewritable BOOKMAN® WriterCard, which can then be read in the same way as a BOOKMAN® book card.

BOOKMAN® WriterCard - WriterCards are interchangeable rewriteable book cards, for use with the BOOKMAN® Writer system. Franklin titles can be downloaded to a PC, then transferred to a WriterCard, which can be read in all Franklin platforms that accept BOOKMAN® Book Cards.

ClariSpeech™ - This is a combination of Lernout and Houspie's text-to-speech technology and Franklin's pronunciation enhancing technology.

Classmates® - This is a Franklin developed "super thesaurus" that classifies words into groups. For example, the Classmates for "fir" are "arborvitae, balsam, balsam fir, box, boxwood..." etc.

Confusables® - This is the Franklin term for words that sound alike but are spelled differently, such as there, their, and they're. Confusables are listed with a brief definition next to each, such as:

there - yonder
their - possessive
they're - they are

Context-sensitive Help Text - This feature enables the user to view screen-specific help messages anywhere in the product. The Franklin product knows where the user is in the product and responds with help text for that particular location.

Crossword Solver - Also known as Letter Detective. This feature allows users to type a "?" for each unknown letter in a word. For example, "gr??t" will result in a list of possible words such as: "graft, grant, great, greet..." etc.

Devotional - This is a list of 366 Bible verses, arranged by date, that emulates a Daily Devotional. For instance, if the user wants to view a verse on/for her mother's birthday, she can scroll to that date and read the corresponding verse.

Flashcards - This is a vocabulary-enhancing exercise. It displays a word on the screen and gives the user the opportunity to look up its definition or to view another word.

Grammar Guide - In monolingual English products, the Grammar Guide is a list of about 80 topics that include Facts About Nouns, Ambiguous Use of Pronouns, Sentence Structure, Punctuation, etc. Each topic explains proper grammar and usage and provides examples. Many topics include quizzes or grammar exercises to make learning fun. In bilingual products, the Grammar Guide is very similar, but is limited to key grammar topics such as nouns and verbs, and is written with a non-native speaker in mind.

Jump - This version of the pick feature is used in some of our children's products. It enables users to highlight a word in text and look up that word within the product. A different "jumping" animation is displayed each time the user looks up a word.

Learn-a-Word - Similar to a "Word-a-day" calendar, this feature (when activated) displays a new word and definition on the screen each time the unit is turned on.

Learn-a-Verse - Similar to Learn-a-Word, this Bible feature displays a new verse on the screen each time the unit is turned on.

Learning Exercises - A Franklin term for a number of learning exercises which currently include:

Cultural Notes (only in some bilingual products)
Flashcards
Grammar Guide
My Word List (User List)
SAT* Word List
Speaking Spelling Bee
Spelling Bee
TOEFL®** Test Word List

MatchMaker™ - This is a feature that allows the user to type an asterisk "*" to stand for a series of letters in a word. For instance, to find all the words that begin with intro, the user can type "intro*" and see words such as"introit, introits, introduce..." etc. This feature is very useful for looking up prefixes and suffixes.

Message Language - This refers to the language of the message prompts, screen instructions, menu items and help messages in multi-language products. The user can pick the desired language from the choices offered.

My Word List - Also known as User List, this allows users to create their own word list using either words in the dictionary or non-dictionary words. Words stored in this list can be used in learning exercises and in games.

Pick - This feature enables users to highlight a word in text and look up that word within the product.

Phonetic Spell Correction - This feature allows users to type in a word the way it sounds and receive a correction list. For example, "nolij" will find "knowledge"; "kaufee" will find "coffee" and so on.

Resume - This feature enables the user to return to the screen last viewed before the unit was turned off.

Reverse Search - This feature enables the user to type up to three words in a definition to search for the exact word the user is looking for but can't remember. For example, searching for "small mammal" will return "aardvark, armadillo…", etc.

SAT Word List - This is a list of words most commonly found on the SAT (Scholastic Assessment Tests). *Note: SAT is a registered trademark of the College Entrance Examination Board, which was not involved in the production of, and does not endorse Franklin products.

Speaking Spelling Bee - This is the speaking version of Spelling Bee. It speaks a word then prompts the user to type it in correctly. If typed wrong, it allows the user to try again.

Spelling Bee - This exercise flashes a word on the screen then prompts the user to type it in correctly. If typed wrong, it allows the user to try again.

TOEFL® Test Word List - This is a list of words most commonly found on the verbal part of the TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language) test. TOEFL® is the test that non-English speaking students are required to take before attending college in the United States. *Note: TOEFL and the Test of English as a Foreign Language are registered trademarks of Educational Testing Service (ETS). Franklin products are not endorsed or approved by ETS.

User List - Also referred to as My Word List, this allows users to create their own word list using words in the book or (sometimes) words not in the book. Words stored in this list can be used in learning exercises and in games.
