Game Descriptions

Anagrams - An anagram is a word or phrase made by rearranging the letters in another word or phrase. In Franklin's Anagrams, the player is asked to make words using letters from the displayed word. The player is prompted both on the minimum length of acceptable words and the number of possible words that can be made.

Build Word List - See Word BuilderTM.

Conjumania!TM - This is a game that teaches verb conjugation, and is found in Franklin's bi-lingual dictionaries. The player is shown an infinitive and is asked to type a conjugation. The player must spell the conjugation correctly, including accents, in order to win.

Cryptomania - The player is challenged to decode quotations that appear as cryptograms. In a cryptogram, each coded letter corresponds to a letter in a quotation. For example, "To be or not to be" might be encrypted as px fu xj wxp px fu.

Decipher the Code - The player is challenged to find a mystery equation by entering numbers and math signs into empty slots. The player begins each problem with 100 points. If he finds the equation in three tries or less, he wins 100 points. For each try greater than three, 10 points are subtracted. The player gets 15 tries to decipher the code.

Deduction - See Word Deduction.

Flashcards - This game flashes words for the player to define or study. Players can look up the definitions of any words they don't know.

Follow the Steps - This game teaches the player how to solve word problems by breaking them into four smaller steps. Each time a step is completed, the player gets 25 points. Each time an incorrect answer is entered, the player loses 10 points. If a question is answered incorrectly three times, the player is moved on to the next question.

Gender TutorTM - This is a game that helps players test their knowledge of noun genders in a language other than English. It is found in Franklin's bi-lingual dictionaries. The player is given a noun and asked to guess its gender.

Guess that Document - The player is challenged to guess a mystery document based on a series of hints. The number of hints given varies by each round. The score is set by the number of hints taken.

Guess that President - The player is challenged to guess a mystery president based on a series of hints. The number of hints given varies by each round. The score is set by the number of hints taken.

Guess the Word - The player is given a word with missing letters and a definition. The object of the game is to guess the word after reading the definition. The number of guesses is limited and the difficulty of the word and number of letters to fill in depends on the chosen level of difficulty.

Guess the Author - The player is given a quotation and is challenged to guess the name of the author. The name of the work that it appears in and the years during which the author lived are given as clues.

Hangman - The player is challenged to guess a mystery word one letter at a time. The object is to guess the word before the man hangs. As the player types, correct letters appear in the word. Every incorrect guess adds another piece to the man. The player is prompted on the number of guesses remaining, and incorrect letters are displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Jacob's Ladder - The player is challenged to guess a mystery word from the Bible. Each letter in the mystery word is represented by a question mark. When the player types a correct guess, the letter is filled in wherever it occurs. Wrong guesses and the number of guesses remaining are displayed on the screen.

Jumble - Also known as Word Jumble. This game tests the player's ability to unscramble letters and form words. The player is given some letters with which to form words using all the given letters. The number of possibilities is listed. The initial number of letters given is dependent on the chosen level of difficulty.

Keyboard Wizard - This is a game of speed. The player is challenged to type a letter that floats across the screen before it gets to the other side.

Letter Chase - The player is challenged to type a mystery cursive letter before it appears fully on the screen.

Letter Poker - Also known as Word Poker, this game challenges the player to make longer words with the letters she is dealt than the house does with its letters. The player and the house take turns betting and discarding. The player doesn't see the house's letters till the end of the game. The scoring is similar to normal poker - one four-letter word is better than two words made of three and two-letters. The longer the word, the better the chances of winning.

Link Four - The player is required to link four game pieces in any direction. This game can be played either against the unit or with a friend. Game pieces are displayed to the right of the screen to show whose turn it is. The first player to link four game pieces wins.

Lotto - See Number Cruncher.

Memory Challenge - As the name suggests, this is a game that tests the memory. The player starts with one word and can go as far as his memory allows. Picture Puzzler - The player is briefly shown a picture and is asked to guess the word that best describes the picture. The total score appears at the top left of the screen. The player loses points for each incorrect letter.

Quiz - This is a translation game. The player is shown a word and must guess its translation.

Search for Clues - The player is challenged to find a mystery number based on the clues she finds. There are ten objects that the player can search. Each object reveals a clue. If the player finds the mystery number in two guesses, she wins 100 points. After the second guess, 5 points are deducted for each guess. Ten points are deducted for each illogical answer - an example of an illogical answer would be entering 10 when the clue says n is an odd number.

Spelling Bee - Players can use this game to test their spelling. A word is flashed on the screen and the player is asked to type it in.

Tic-Tac-Toe - This is an electronic version of the popular game. The player is challenged to get three X's in a row before the unit gets three O's in a row.

Weigh the Evidence - The player is given four weights on a scale and two empty scales to the center and the right. He is challenged to use three of the given weights on a scale either to the center or the right to equal the target number. Only one weight can be moved at a time. Only the weight at the top of the stack can be moved. A larger weight cannot be placed on a smaller weight. The player begins each problem with a score of 100 points. Five points are subtracted for each move beyond the fewest possible needed to solve that particular problem.

Word AuctionTM - The player tries to bid on all the letters of a mystery word before his cash runs out. The amount of each bid depends on the frequency of a letter. All bids cost the player, whether correct or incorrect. If the player guesses the word by revealing all of the letters, his remaining cash it added to the next round.
