FRANKLIN ELECTRONIC PUBLISHERS AND LANGENSCHEIDT VERLAG ENTER INTO GLOBAL LICENSING AGREEMENT
Agreement Provides for Franklin's Distribution of New Electronic Dictionaries under the Franklin® and Seiko® Brands
Munich, Germany and Burlington, NJ, 6 October 2005. Franklin Electronic Publishers, Inc. (AMEX:FEP), a world leader in handheld
information, has entered into an Omnibus Licensing Agreement with the Langenscheidt Verlag (Publisher) that provides for the
companies to cooperate in producing and marketing electronic dictionaries with content from Langenscheidt.
As a result of the strategic alliance between Franklin and Seiko Instruments Inc. (SII), a Japanese market leader, the licensed
Langenscheidt titles will be incorporated into a new Multi-Title Dictionary Line of handheld products for distribution by
Franklin and SII in the Asian and European markets.
Initially, Franklin is distributing the products under both the Franklin and Seiko brands in the German-speaking markets. The
cooperation of Franklin and Langenscheidt provides a broad range of up-to-date dictionary content, reference works, and
language guides for Franklin's new generation of e-dictionaries. Walter Schillings, Executive Director of Franklin Electronic
Publishers (Deutschland) GmbH said "We are planning a wide range of professional, bilingual translation devices in which the
technology- and design-oriented hardware know-how of SII, the linguistic, electronic reference, and language learning skills
of Franklin, and the many years of dictionary content expertise of Langenscheidt, the world class German publisher, complement
each other ideally." Hubert Haarmann, Director Electronic Business at Langenscheidt, says of the cooperation: "It is an
important step forward in our policy of cooperating with strong partners."
Over 10 years ago, Franklin pioneered the electronic dictionary market in Germany and continues to be a leading provider in
German-speaking markets. Franklin's strategic alliance with SII and the cooperation with Langenscheidt now enable Franklin to
offer a comprehensive range in the electronic dictionary sector. Franklin's range of high-quality devices cover the spectrum
from travel guides to multilingual dictionaries and other reference works for use by travelers, life-time learners, business
professionals, and students alike.
