Twist is a weekly single panel cartoon taken from the Sev Wide Web site. It takes everyday situations or events and gives them an unexpected twist. Nothing is immune - fairy tales, historical events, household chores, space travel, shopping and famous landmarks all receive a ‘twist’. In the Twist world, babies read newspapers, doormats say what we really think and Rapunzel learns the harsh truth of relationships. Animals are thrust into human situations, modern lifestyle is reflected in ancient times and fairy tales are brought crashing down to reality.
The Twist began as miscellaneous doodlings in my ideas notebooks. Early in my cartooning career, I made a daily habit of writing as many different ideas in my notebook as possible. At the time, I was commuting by train every day so this gave me a regular period where I had nothing to do but be creative. I concentrated on developing ideas and jokes for my comic strip The Pits. However, all sorts of crazy ideas spewed out of my brain including scifi parodies, the developing of an alternative sci-fi civilisation in another galaxy and occasionally, a miscellaneous single gag.
Over time, the collection of single gags built up into a sizeable pile and being someone who hates waste, I hosed off the raw ideas and polished them into the single gag cartoon "Bent". I started sending samples out to local newspapers. I soon received a phone call from Courier Mail caricaturist Sean Leahy who alerted me to another single gag cartoon "Bent Offerings". As the saying goes, 'a rose by any other name is still a rose' so I decided to change the title. "Twist" was one of the first alternatives that came to mind.
I continued sending samples to newspapers and a few papers ran the cartoon. However, Twist really started to find readers (or vica versa) when I published it on my website. The steady flow of visitors to my scifi parodies were starting to flow onto the other areas of my site, including Twist. I began a weekly caption contest where visitors submitted captions to a Twist cartoon that is still going strong today.
