Local Community Outreach Franklin recognizes the importance of our role in supporting our local community and other surrounding areas. Our "Franklin Cares" committee searches out ways Franklin can contribute to the betterment of our neighbors. In the past this has included hosting blood banks, collecting back-to-school supplies, and sponsoring a team in a bicycle race raising money for MS research.
Franklin is also proud to contribute to our global community through the creation of the Franklin Global SpellEvent. Begun in 2009, the Franklin Global SpellEvent is a global spelling competition for nonnative English speaking students under the age of 15. The competition is sponsored and organized by Franklin Electronic Publishers in cooperation with the global professional association for English language teaching, Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. (TESOL)
English is the new lingua franca that binds us together in an ever shrinking world. Spelling is more than just memorization; it is about understanding the language, and languages it originated from. In creating the Franklin Global SpellEvent, Franklin is attempting to help prepare young adults to enter the global marketplace with more confidence in their ability to communicate and connect.
Environmental OutreachFranklin is concerned about the impact we have on our environment. In a society with an ever growing focus on green technologies and sustainable materials, Franklin is constantly pursuing ways to adjust our methods and practices to meet environmental needs. We have recycling programs established within our corporate office.
Accordingly, Franklin is pleased to pursue a line of packaging in line with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). The SFI program is designed to use voluntary third-party certification of proper forest management and logging practices in an effort to maintain sustainable development. By partnering with SFI, Franklin can validate that the paper purchased for use in some of our packaging is reliably recycled.
In addition, Franklin recognizes how the mercury used in button-cell batteries creates concerns when it's time for replacement. We are always looking for ways to reduce the use of button-cell batteries in our products and thus reduce their environmental impact.
In an ever-shrinking global community, environmental concerns will continue to be at the heart of every business model. As the needs of our retail partners change, Franklin is committed to studying new and better ways to make, operate and package our products in environmentally conscious ways while continuing to protect the investment and integrity of our products.
